Geography – Dragonheart: “Against the tides, We stand.”

Dragonheart

Located deep within the heart of the northern nation of Isild, Dragonheart is a vast and centralized trading hub. Ordered streets and protective layered walls defend the city from outward attack and the hordes of monsters called forth during Kurzen’s Beckoning. While the city lies far from the outlying national borders of Isild, a great number of refugees and expatriates call the city home in the wake of the Darkest War. Recent turns in the city’s leadership and a rising politician named Edgar Bohemn have disrupted Dragonheart’s usual quiet inner workings.

Layout:

The city of Dragonheart is built between a series of four large hills alongside the Dragonheart lake of Isild, which flanks the city on the eastern, northern, and southern side. Between the eastern hills lies a gatehouse leading to the immediate surroundings of the city. Dragonheart is enclosed within high walls, with more walls separating the inner districts from one another. An artificial moat surrounds the outermost wall of the city, flowing at the base of the hills themselves. Built on top of the northwesternmost hill is a large castle known as The Lair, which houses the ruling family of Dragonheart and the political machine of the city. The northeastern hill contains a smaller keep meant for Dragonheart’s local military and proper defenses. The southeastern hill is known for a large structure known as the Pillars, a place of higher education and study. The Pillars are frequented by the intellectual and military elite of Isild, and they are the primary place where the defense of the nation is maintained and orchestrated. The southeastern hill is home to a district known simply as the Estate, a large cluster of manors and mansions inhabited by the city’s societal elite.

A series of artificial canals divides the city, and travel along these canals is a primary method of transportation within Dragonheart.

A series of warehouses, factories, and other like structures stand on the westernmost side of the city, flanking the lake and the docks beyond. The trade and financial districts rest in the center of the city. Separating the two are the largest poor sections of residential areas, with tall, run down apartments and clustered buildings housing Dragonheart’s rabble. Surrounding the financial districts to the north are the main airship towers, which are backed by a series of regular apartments for middle-class citizens. The farther south one travels into the city towards the Pillars and the Estate, the more affluent one becomes, with this region containing a separate market district selling significantly more expensive goods and services. Various department stores lie within the two financial districts, and many of the shops in the southern district are encased within a larger Arcade, which protects the citizens from the outside weather as they peruse their wares. Four Eldric Resonance Towers supply eldric power to Dragonheart, and eldric goods are common possessions for those of all walks of life. An island on the vast Dragonheart Lake is home to the only CORE refinement facility within 50 miles of the city.

Current News:

With Kurzen’s Beckoning looming in the immediate future, the Kuzar Family has taken steps to ensure Dragonheart’s survival. The recent expansion of Vathis Sentinel activity and the involvement of the industrial and political components of the city have grown the city’s defensive forces greatly. This ambitious expansion has allowed an upcoming politician named Edgar Bohemn to move in and carve off a formidable slice of power, complete with his own retinue of cohorts and allies. In turn, the city has largely rallied around Edgar as a force of good, but some are worried that his posturing may be merely a front for a larger and more mischievous goal. The flush of fresh money into the city has caused the soft underbelly of Dragonheart to harden, emboldening the once craven criminals to commit greater acts of offense. Rumor has it that the strongest of Dragonheart’s underworld has been displaced or forcibly removed by an organization who calls themselves the Void. For an unknown reason, it would appear that the city’s guards are turning a blind eye to the group and allowing them to operate freely. Given the recent turmoil, political upheaval, and pending Kurzen’s Beckoning, Dragonheart’s future sways in the balance, uncertain.
